Woodworking

My first project as a student in the Palomar College Cabinet and Furniture Technology Program was a grandfather clock, which won a blue ribbon at the Del Mar Fair.

Back around 2012, my wife and I took woodworking classes in the Palomar College Cabinet and Furniture Technology Program. It was really a great experience. During the first semester I built a grandfather clock which was constructed from walnut and ebony. For the second semester I designed and built an unusual bathroom vanity made from beautiful book-matched walnut and ‘ebonized’ walnut. From a chemistry perspective it was very interesting to learn that one can ‘stain’ walnut black with iron oxide that you generate by soaking an iron source (nails of steel wool) in vinegar. For the front house door I built the frame (purchased the door) and I also designed and built a cedar/redwood fence.
